10 Must Have Add-Ons for Motorcycle Touring

After taking several multi-day trips on my motorcycle, I decided on this list of add-ons that I wouldn’t leave home without. This list is a combination of gear and bike enhancements.

  1. Engine Guards – My engine has been hit more than once with a large rock thrown up by a truck. Why take the chance of having it damaged on a ride.
  2. Crash Guards – Just laying a bike down in a parking lot can do a lot of expensive damage to the fairings and engine. These are cheap insurance against costly damage.
  3. Handguards – My existing handguards are dinged and nicked from the many rocks that have been thrown up by cars and trucks. Better them to take the hit than my knuckles.
  4. A GPS unit – Not essential but it sure comes in handy when you can’t figure out where you are. It can also help you find the closest gas and food.
  5. 12 Volt Outlet – How many times has your cell phone gone dead when you needed it most. Also handy to keep the GPS going.
  6. Flat Kit – Flat tires usually happen when you least expect them and in the most inconvenient places. This is cheap insurance.
  7. Tank Bag w/Map Case – Especially handy if you don’t have the GPS. This is where I store all of my maps and keep the one I’m using in full view on my tank.
  8. Rain Gear – Sometimes, riding in the rain is not a choice. Why get soaked?
  9. Carry Case or Panniers – You need a place to put stuff, including things you may buy on the trip. I also use mine to store my $600. helmet when I park.
  10. Camera – Okay, it’s not exactly an add-on, but you need to take Pictures! Everyone likes to see pictures from your trip, especially the people you left at home because they don’t ride.

There’s of course more you could take, but this is the top 10 list. I’ll save the rest for the top 20 list, when I get a bigger bike.
